Kenyan payslip components

A Kenyan payslip separates basic salary from allowances (house, transport) and lists statutory deductions individually: PAYE withheld for KRA, SHIF (the Social Health Insurance Fund that replaced NHIF), NSSF Tier I and Tier II contributions, and the Affordable Housing Levy. Rates change with each Finance Act, so confirm current figures before running payroll.

How to create a Kenyan payslip

1. Enter employer, employee, payroll number, pay period, and payment date
2. List basic salary and each allowance separately
3. Enter PAYE, SHIF, NSSF, and the Housing Levy as separate deduction lines
4. Check gross pay minus total deductions equals the net pay you will transfer
5. Print or save the payslip as a PDF

Payslip formula

Net pay = total earnings − total deductions. Employer-side NSSF matching and levies are company costs and should not appear as employee deductions.

Kenyan payroll compliance checklist

• PAYE: apply KRA's graduated monthly bands, subtract personal relief, and remit via iTax by the 9th of the following month
• SHIF: the employee contribution to the Social Health Authority is a percentage of gross salary (2.75% at the time of writing, subject to a minimum)
• NSSF: show Tier I and Tier II separately; the employer matches the employee amount as a company cost
• Affordable Housing Levy: 1.5% of gross salary from the employee, matched by the employer
• Records: give every employee a payslip each pay period and issue a P9 tax deduction card at year end
